Abstract: Brazil experienced an outbreak of Zika virus impacting on the birth of children with congenital syndrome, and consequent impairment in its development, demanding family care. This is constituted and organized according to the historical, social and political conditions of an era. Since then, she has been suffering throughout the history of transformations configuring different types of family, as can be seen the new contemporary family configurations and with them the emergence of (re) significations, values and new practices of parenting. In the 1970s, with the industrial revolution, the hegemony of capitalism, social changes and feminist movements, there were discussions regarding the identity and place of women in the family and gender relations in the family, verifying transformations in the maternity and in the roles parental roles, rediscounting the father's place in the dynamics of family care. In this care we observe a crossing between parenting and health, that is, the family also constitutes a space for health practices. The present study intends to understand the significance of paternal parenting and health care by the father of a child with congenital syndrome by Zika virus in the sertão of Paraíba. This is an exploratory study in a qualitative approach. Participants were nine subjects who exercised the parenting of children with Congenital Syndrome of the Zika Virus in the backlands of Paraíba. Data were collected through an in-depth interview, recorded with consent and analyzed by Discourse Analysis. The sample, using the snowball technique and the number of participants defined by the criterion of saturation. Of the nine parents studied, the age ranged from 21 to 55 years, five declared married civil status and most of them attended elementary school. The empirical data analysis provided four categorical units of discourse: The meanings attributed to paternal parenting; Dynamic reactivity and coping by parents to the diagnosis of congenital syndrome by Zika virus; Care for the child with congenital syndrome and the participation of the father and the implications of the care in the life of the subjects who exercise the parenting. The present study, in giving voice to parents, can understand, in spite of its limitations, that being a father was a self-affirmation of masculinity and virility exercised by a patriarchal or sometimes contemporary parenting. The father of a child with a congenital syndrome by Zika virus demanded care that was given mainly in the daily routine, material maintenance of the house, marking and followup in consultations and hospitalizations and purchase of health supplies. Although mothers were more concerned with the care of their children, in harmony with the social conceptions of maternal love and the sexual division of labor within the family, the parents presented themselves as coadjuvants in these, since they are limited - in their discourse - by work, lack of information and experience in the management, care outside the home where they lived and maternal monopoly of care. Care for the child brought direct implications to the lives of the family and those around them. From this study it is necessary to develop public policies in the field of collective health with the aim of giving greater visibility to the father man as the main protagonist of care in the family and in the health of the children.
